My New Sacramento Kings Piece “Rivals” is now on exhibit Crocker Art Museum
As I write this, it’s truly a “pinch me” moment. My latest piece is on exhibit through January 5th at the Crocker Art Museum as part of an art installation Celebrating 40 Years in Sacramento for the Sacramento Kings.
The artwork
"Rivals," was commissioned by the Sacramento Kings specifically for this event. At 48" x 24" this is by far my biggest and highest profile piece to date. Composed of watercolor and ink in my signature style, the scene features Malik Monk of the Sacramento Kings elevating over Bay Area rival Draymond Green for an outrageous dunk.
The creative brief simply instructed, “Focus on a player from the Sacramento Era”. And while there are many greats to choose from, I instantly knew I had to choose Monk. Every time he steps on the floor, his heart, passion, and energy are on full display.
Monk is a dynamic figure and that can be challenging to capture, but with each new line and layer of paint the explosiveness of the player and the emotion slowly took form. In the end, the power of the scene combined with with the softness of the watercolor give the work an almost dreamlike quality.
For those interested in seeing how something like this comes to life, I’ve included a few progress shots below.
The exhibit
My work stands in a hall packed with incredible pieces from other talented local artists. Each does an incredible job of highlighting the players and heroes I grew up idolizing as a boy.
The exhibit will run through January 5th, and is the perfect excuse to check out the incredible artwork at the Crocker.
The Reception
To add to the fun, Crocker Art Museum will be hosting ArtMix: In the Paint on November 14, which I'll definitely be attending. This event will showcase the exhibit and bring together the worlds of Kings basketball and art.
According to the program details, "ArtMix guests will have the opportunity to witness live performances from the Kings entertainment team, participate in interactive art activities, partake in photo opportunities, and interact with Jr. Kings coaches. The event will also include a chalk talk featuring Kings personalities and special guests, sharing their experiences with the franchise and their favorite moments over the last 40 years. To learn more and purchase tickets, visit CrockerArt.org/ArtMix."
